OCONTO, WI (April 7, 2020)— To stop the spread of COVID-19 during this public health emergency, Debra Konitzer, Oconto County Health Officer has ordered all Oconto County campgrounds and boat landings closed, as well as the suspension of ATV use on county roads. This health order takes effect on Wednesday, April 8, 2020 at 5:00 a.m. and remains in effect until further notice.
The role of the Health Officer includes the authority to take all measures necessary to prevent, suppress and control the spread of communicable disease. This includes forbidding public gatherings when deemed necessary to control the outbreaks of disease pandemics.
“We understand this can be a challenging situation to adjust to,” stated Debra Konitzer, Oconto County Health Officer. “This public health emergency is requiring sacrifices from each of us, but we all must do what we can to help save lives and stop the spread of this virus.”
Under the Governor’s Safer at Home Order, outdoor enthusiasts are asked to stay close to home to stop the spread of the virus. If you head out in the community, practice social distancing by maintaining at least 6 feet of distance between yourself and others.
“Oconto County is committed to the health and safety of the county residents,” stated Konitzer as one of the reasons for the order. “These outdoor activities draw many people in from outside of our county, increasing our population and putting a burden on our healthcare system. Limiting travel is one of the best ways to stop the spread of COVID-19.”
Konitzer stressed that now is the time to assure that actions are taken to reduce the spread of COVID-19 in Oconto County. Community cooperation with all of the COVID-19 public health emergency orders should reduce disease spread and return our county to normal routines sooner rather than later.
